About this game

Fritz 5 is a chess program designed for players of all skill levels with extensive training and analysis tools. The software builds introduces a - according to the developer - speed-optimized chess engine capable of analyzing up to 200,000 positions per second. The program is supported by a large, adaptive opening library and a comprehensive endgame database containing fully calculated five‑piece endings.

The program offers multiple play modes, including rapid games, tournament time controls, handicap matches, and mate‑search challenges. A built‑in tutor evaluates candidate moves, provides hints, and reviews completed games. Players can adjust Fritz’s style - ranging from cautious to highly aggressive - and configure preferred piece usage or opening lines for targeted training. A database of master games and an opening book with over one million positions support study and preparation. Additional features include tactical tests with 200 preset positions, compatibility with earlier Fritz engines (versions 2–4), and optional integration with other engines such as Hiarcs 6 and Doctor 2, as well as the ChessBase database software.

Fritz 5 is the first version to feature voice-acting in English or German, commenting the matches as the fictional personality Fritz.
