Privacy policy

Retro eXo Stories (stories.retro-exo.com) is run by the Retro eXo preservation project. This page explains what information the site collects, why, and what happens to it. Questions about anything here: retroexo@gmail.com.

WHAT WE COLLECT

When you create an account: a username, which is public, and an email address, which is not. If you sign up with a password, it is stored only in scrambled (hashed) form; we can't see it.

If you sign in with Google or Discord: that service shares your name, email address, account ID and profile picture with us. We use the email address and ID to sign you in. We don't post anything to your Google or Discord account, and we can't see your password there.

When you write a story: the title, the text, the games you tag, and the date. Published stories are public, credited to your username.

When you report a story: which story, the reason and any note you add. Reports are seen only by the site's moderators.

When you browse: the site uses a small number of cookies, only to keep you signed in, protect forms from forgery, and remember whether you chose the Plain view. There are no ads, no advertising cookies, and no analytics or tracking scripts. Like most websites, our hosting provider keeps short-lived server logs, which include IP addresses, for security and troubleshooting.

HOW WE USE IT

To run your account, show your stories and profile, send account emails (confirming your address, resetting your password), and keep the site free of spam and abuse. We don't sell or rent your information, and we don't use it for advertising.

WHO ELSE HANDLES IT

The site runs on Render (hosting and database). Game images and site artwork are stored on Cloudflare. Account emails are sent through an email delivery service. These companies process data only to provide those services to us. Google and Discord are involved only if you choose to sign in with them.

YOUR STORIES AND THE LICENSE

When you publish a story, you agree to share it under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 license (CC BY-SA 4.0). The purpose of this site is to preserve personal histories of these games, so published stories may be kept in the project's archive and shared with credit to you, as that license allows.

You can delete a story at any time. It disappears from the site, and a copy is kept in the project's private archive.

DELETING YOUR ACCOUNT

You can delete your account from your profile page. This removes your email address, your password and any linked Google or Discord sign-in. Your username stays reserved, and your published stories stay on the site credited to you as a former member, under the license above.

CHILDREN

This site is not directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect information from them. If you believe a child under 13 has created an account, contact us and we will remove it.

YOUR CHOICES

You can see and edit your stories at any time on your profile page. To ask what information we hold about you, or to have something corrected, email retroexo@gmail.com.

CHANGES

If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted here with a new date.
