Discovering PC games

Written for the Story of the Week: The first computer game you ever played

Night Mission Pinball (v3.0)

My grandmother had a DOS PC that I played on a lot as a kid. I was a console gamer and had a NES at home, but also enjoyed the unique games she had. Most of what she had were game show based video games like Wheel of Fortune and Family Feud, but on top of those I got addicted to Night Mission Pinball. Sure, compared to the NES the graphics were incredibly simplistic, heck I think there were less colors than even the 2600 could have. Even than, I loved the gameplay, especially since me seeing an actual pinball machine was a rarity. I spent hours learning the digital table, racking up the bombs that counted as bonus points when you drained the ball, and figuring out all the toys on the playing field. The game was mostly playable with just three keys, one for each flipper and one to launch the ball. If I remember correctly you could shake the table and tilt it but I rarely risked that. There were many evenings I would kill time in there getting my high score up before enjoying some pizza and watching some TMNT or Home Alone. This started up my fascination with computers, and I wanted one so bad from that point. I later on got a VTech Precomputer 1000 that I learned Basic on, but it took me years later when I was 16 and got my first job to get my first modern PC at the time, a Windows 98 Gateway. That's probably a store for another time though.
